Scott and I headed up to Heather Ridge Farm on Saturday to meet our friends Ruth and Jared for lunch at the Bees Knees Cafe, and to get some healthy grass-fed chicken, delectable honey, and delicious cheese from the many items available at the farm store. Of course we ended up running into several other friends while there as it is a wonderful spot to visit on a Saturday. We knew we would see our friend Jane Hershey, she takes part in the Saturday farm store, selling lavender and mint and herbs and vegetables and beautiful flowers grown in her organic garden in Potter Hollow. Bob Braine was there to get supplies for he and his wife Leslie, who just delivered little baby James the night before (Congratulations!). Mary Lou Nahas dropped by on her way back from her morning treasure hunting and had lunch with us. Mary Lou and her husband Nick run an antiques and collectibles store, I. U. Tripp, in an 1888 Victorian general store in Oak Hill. It is a beautiful historic building filled with lovely wares, take a look at their website, www.iutripp.com for more information.
We also always meet some interesting and talented people. This Saturday we met Maija Niemanis and her husband. Maija is a jeweler, take a look at her luscious 22 carat gold adornments at www.maijaniemanis.com. When we first started talking she mentioned that she had been a stylist (and an award winning costume designer) and had worked with Irving Penn and Pete Turner among many other famous photographers. Rather than initially saying Irving Penn she called him Mr. Penn, "because that was the way he was". At Sotheby's I had the honor of photographing many works by Mr. Penn and was thrilled to have met someone who had worked with him!
Heather Ridge Farm is run by Carol Clement and John Harrison. Take a look at their website. Also, here is a link to a great article in "The Valley Table".
A quote from the Heather Ridge Farm website:
"We believe a grass-based farm is better for the animals, better for the farmers, better for the environment and better for the consumers. It's a sustainable system of agriculture that offers you the healthiest, leanest, tastiest products we can raise."
The summer store hours are 9am to 12 noon. Then the Bees Knees Cafe opens at noon, serving until 3pm, with fabulous organic vegetables and fruits from Stoneledge Farm served with Heather Ridge Farm products and other items from local farms.
